Felix Bracquemond (1833 - 1914)

Ducks staring at a thunderstorm. The dramatic effect no doubt borrowed from Rembrandts famous example. There seem to be different states of this print with different dramatic effect. Like the other French pioneering master etchers he was very impressed by the examples of the Old Masters.  See his classic rendering of an Albert Cuyp landscape. Bracquemond was the first to pioneer with colour etching. So far no direct copies after Rembrandt’s landscapes came to my knowledge.  

Bracquemond is well known for his renderings of ducks (canards). They also appear in “Surprise” which is represented in the Nymphaeum “Bathers” collection.
