This magnificent bouquet is the only woodblock print by this Düsseldorf artist and art restorer known to me. Known from landscape, flower and interior paintings but also by some female nudes.  His 1911 exhibited “Bachantin” he considered himself his best best work or Opous Magnus. It refers probably to the etching of one of the mythological companions and servants of Dionysos.

In depicting a Bachante he followed famous German artists like Louis Corinth, Friedrich August von Kaulbach and Ernst Oppler who are also known to have had  a weak spot for these companions of the Wine God.

Bachante inspired works by Lovis Corinth (below), Friedrich von Kaulbach (portrait) and Ernst Oppler (Anna Pavlova dancing Bachante in the Russian Ballet)
