André Frémond (1884 - 1965)

“2 Ara’s”

André Frémond is an artist almost exclusively known because of his exquisite horse drawings. These two colourful “pochoir” (stencilled) parrots were printed  in an edition of 300 are the exception to the rule.

Fremonds horse drawings are immediately reminding of Rosa Bonheur, the world famous French female painter who was much praised for her speciality: horses. Her huge (2,5 x 5 meter) “Foir du Cheval” (the horse fair)  was exhibited in the 1853 Salon in Paris together with Gustave Courbet’s “Baigneuses” causing a scandal.

They were probably displayed deliberately to provoke visiting the exhibition Napoleon-III and his consort to suggest Eve just climbed from the Horse Fair with the sturdy built Percherons into the next frame.

Suzanne Camille Desirée Fremont

(1876 - 1962)

If Suzanne is (distantly) related to André I have no idea. Researching André I stumbled over her possibly inspired by Henri Lebasque (master of this genre), rendering of an odalisque or reclining female nude.

There’s no need to show  André’s Percherons with Suzannes Odalisque, “à la manière du Salon 1853”. The idea does not seem, even remotely funny.
