Paul Gervais (1859 - 1944)

“In the hamam”

Etching after a painting by Paul Gervais, French fashionable painter at the end of the 19. Century known for his colourful work, nudes and images of the Hellenistic world. Some of which, like the above trying to rival famous examples (Gérome, right), were copied as etchings while the original painting could not be found using modern digital resources.

Some examples of Gervais colourful work. Although the women are “speaking to the imagination of the onlooker” the small still life is my personal favourite painting by this artist.
