Sometimes, with much freedom and hesitation, an attribution is made, has to be made. Finding this maltreated, detached from its key- block perimeter any written maker’s clue, print…. It could have been created by Elfrieda von Joeden, knowing this other square and signed on the backing carton print by her. But, of course, I realise it could have been made by a dozen other printmakers as well.
Knowing the artist is a treat and a privilege. Not knowing, with certainty does not make it less attractive and is only a matter of time: sooner or later a second surviving copy, hopefully with some evidence in writing will show up. And prove me right or wrong.
