Aristide Maillol (1861-1944)
Chloe with goat (12 x 12,5 cm.)
Obviously printed from the original block and probably an illustration to Daphne and Chloe published in 1937 in an edition of 500 copies. Many of these illustrations are in red and offered in auctions, ripped from the original books. This carefully printed copy is printed with black ink. I have not been able to exactly locate this edition, nor could I find a second example of this lovely print, it was “just found and picked up”. Time will learn.
I would not mind finding other prints like this by Maillol, or one of the other books he illustrated like Ovids “l’Art d’aimer”: The art of Love.

Regularly Maillol’s woodblock print illustrations detached from the original book editions can be found offered in auctions. Here are some examples. Signed by this great artist copies also seem to float around.
