“Japanese landscapes with fishermen” (10 x 7 cm)

After one of his two visits to Japan (1900 and 1911)

A monochrome copy of this small etching was recently auctioned in Paris in 2020. It was the only other example I could find concluding it must be rare. It is said to be created in 1901, so directly after Orliks first Japan visit in 1900. It almost fetched the high-end of the estimated price. No proof of the claim (dating) could be found.

This copy, in green and black was discovered amongst piles of prints in an old collection being dissolved. Although not in perfect condition it is a privilege to be able to represent Orlik in this collection with an original work. Orlik is considered the founding father of Modern Printmaking. He taught many of the pioneering women printmakers in Berlin’s “Kunstgewerbeschule” classes.

In 1921 a portfolio “Die Reise nach Japan” appeared which held 12 lithographic drawings after second visit. The other example comes from this portfolio.
